We're off again to the state of Guerrero, Mexico, where Waterloo Road Baptist Church has been serving since 1990. Our strategic partnership with STBS, the Baptist Seminary in San Jeronimito, has given us the opportunity to see the world thru missional eyes. This year we celebrate our 21st annual mission trip as a church. Please be in prayer for us this week as we minister thru leadership training seminars, vacation bible schools, evangelism, EvangeCube training, an eyeglasses ministry and just plain old fellowship with our brothers in Christ in the state of Guerrero, Mexico.

Refleciones

If I look out the airplane window to my left, I can see all of Zihuatanejo Bay and part of Ixtapa Bay.......... This is the part of the trip where I can finally stop and process some of the things that have happened this past week........ all those bigs ways and small ways that God made His presence seen and felt. It's also a chance to stop and think about the multitude of other trips that many of us have made to Zihua over the past 20 years.

I like this place....... I like the people, the climate, the ocean, the food and just the atmosphere in general. The fact that God chose us to work and serve in this area is for me one of life's little mysteries....... because it doesn't hurt ........ It doesn't feel sacrificial, you see, because my friends live here...... some of my best friends....... in my life. And I get to make this yearly sojourn with some good friends from home as well.

So...........Why is it so hard to get new people to go with us ?? Yes, I know...... It costs a little money and you don't want to have to use any of your precious vacation time on a 'church trip'. Believe me, I get it. But this isn't Falls Creek, or a men's retreat, or a summer youth trip, or anything like that at all. In fact it's almost hard to put into words some of the stuff that we've seen and done (ahh or better yet seen God do) over the years. But let me try..............

In 2005, the Guerrero State Baptist Convention announced a plan to plant 25 churches in 3 years. As a method to share that vision, they put together a series of yearly "Vision Tours". These happened in the second week of January every year and were an absolute blast........ We would load up the 2 seminary vans and headed out over the mountains to visit potential church plant sites, pray over them, and basically try to just get a better understanding of the task at hand. The state of Guerrero is a big place and it's geographic features tend to make traveling arduous and at times dangerous ........ But always interesting. We've stopped at the top of mountain passes where the fog makes it look like the mountaintops are floating islands. We got stuck one night in Zapotitlan Tablas..... an indigenous community at the literal end of a mountain road. It was a little tense, as these folks are generally Animist and weren't sure what to do with a bunch of Christians. I slept in the back seat of the seminary van with two of my Mexican friends and froze my hinney off but it was a priceless experience. The next day, when the sun came up and it was once again safe to drive thru the mountain passes, we headed out and stopped in the capital, Chilpancingo, and actually had a meeting with the Secretary General of the state and his staff at the Governors palace. (I still have his business card) They told us that they liked us and would help when they could, as they believed that the moral values we presented were good for the population ;)

One time we visited a town called Tlapa in the far northern part of the state. It is mostly indigenous but there is one Baptist church. Indigenous dress is prevalent and frankly, it's what I imagine a trip to Bolivia or Paraguay would look like.

But more than all these things, the highlight for many of us is to have been involved in hands-on church planting. We've participated in many church plants - from start to finish....... From the vision stage (someone felt God's call to plant in a certain area), to strategy, to finding that 'person of peace', to personel staffing, financing - we've seen and done it all and God has shown us His heart thru the whole process.

We've been blessed to see our own BGCO sign a partnershihp agreement with the Guerrero convention - and then to renew that agreement. I was invited to participate in the drafting of the final document - a treasured memory. We've watched STBS, the seminary, grow from a little bible college on a dirt street to a real University offering four year degrees with new dormitories and married student housing. It is slowly approaching the size of the other Baptist seminary in Mexico, located in Mexico City.

And the people ....... friends for a lifetime that I wouldn't trade for anything. I first met the President of the Guerrero Baptist Convention when he was 14 years old and just this week was called 'abuelo' by a seminary student that I've known and traveled with for at least 6 years. Priceless friends - and I'm not even a people person ;)

I love Mexico - for a multitude of reasons...... My reasons. And if you ask anyone else who has been to Mexico with us, maybe they can share with you THEIR reasons. God calls us to mission and I know He calls everyone differently - but one thing for sure, He DOES call everyone. You're not exempted because you play hand bells or work with Awana kiddos. You're not exempted if you help with the homeless ministry or teach Sunday School. We are to get outside of the building and to get going.

I read a quote from someone the other day that said: "The church exists by Mission as a fire exists by burning"

Come to Mexico with us and help keep the fire burning - you'll be blessed for your obedience.........

Wednesday....... Leadership Conference and Last day of VBS !

Wednesday morning I went to the Leadership Conference in the morning - I needed to hook up with friend and seminary student Chano to give him a laptop that I had brought down. Marcia recently got a new one so we decided to retire the old one to a vacation home in Zihua :) I also needed to drop off some of the bags of clothes to Wilbert at the Primer Iglesia Bautista de Zihua where the conference was being held.

So, Wednesday afternoon we went back out to the Acilo for the last day of VBS and evangelism. It was raining - I think all the dampness contributed to my loss of my voice and impending sickness. But anyway...... here I am when I could still talk

The VBS theme was the "Big Apple" - the Lifeway VBS material that we had used at First Baptist of Petetlan when I came down in July.

Griff preached the final sermon - and here's the cool part: Santiago came to the service ! (the guy whose yard was in need of a little landscaping) The dude was all smiles and received his New Testament with visible joy. The other visible joy was the big smile on my face - I don't have much faith in the 'ask Jesus into your heart' by 'praying the prayer of salvation' style of evangelism. It is formulaic, not grace based and leaves Jesus out of the picture........ anyway.... we'll talk about that another time. SO, God showed me that indeed, Santiago had been waiting on our visit that afternoon. The idea that God chose him before the beginning of time and KNEW that he had an appointment with me at 4:35pm on Wednesday just blows my mind. It shouldn't but it does........

Tuesday

Here we are back at the Acilo ........ the center for abandoned adults for Day 2 of VBS and neighborhood evangelism.......

This dude here was the first guy we visited........ his name is Francisco and he accepted Christ after a short (make that very short) conversation....... I'm thinking that maybe he just wanted us off his front porch.......... and I'm not just being humorous this time :-/

These characters here, on the other hand, did not accept Christ....... there is a strong Jehovah Witness influence in the neighborhood

This is Santiago's front yard........ I believe that the Lord had two purposes in mind when He sent us here......... 1) to make me feel better about the condition of my front yard and 2) to bring the Good News to Santiago's household. Both goals were accomplished........ more about Santiago later

Back at the Acilo, they were preparing for the preaching service, but first

we had to finish singing the "Big Apple" VBS songs.

Griff had the brilliant idea of taking pics of the kiddos and then then next day, give the kids their pictures....... it was a big hit.

Monday - Eyeglasses Ministry & VBS in Las Pozas

Even tho it might look like a prison, this building is the Abandoned Seniors Center in Las Pozas.......... Pastor Griff, Joetta and I will be working there the rest of the week. The building is not completed yet (included here are some pics of the work in progress) but they are allowing the Las Pozas house church to use the facility for 3 days of VBS as well as an vision check/eyeglasses ministry.....

It seems that in Mexico, sometimes fathers don't do that great of a job being dads and when they become old and infirm, they have no one to care for them because they really aren't respected. This 'retirement facility' provides a place for them to come and be cared for.

So before everything started, I went out with my 'posse' again ........ here we are making our way down the rocky path. Everywhere are what look like 'lagoons' or standing water where the locals have scooped out the soil to make bricks...... then it rains and you have nasty pools of water everywhere.

We had 49 kids show up for VBS .......

'Dr. Ken Flaming' and Sara Flaming gave out over 42 pairs of glasses and in the process, 14 received Christ. It is an incredible ministry tool and I'm sure we'll use it again it in the future.

Sunday morning in 'Lomas del Valle' (hills of the valley...? )

It was a great Sunday morning at the church on the dumpsite. I'm reminded that Pastor/Author Erwin McManus of the well known Mosaic Church in LA once built a mission church on a dumpsite near downtown Dallas................. so these folks are in good company :-)

And Pastor Griff never disappoints........ he preached on Mephibosheth (say that 10 times real fast) in 2 Samuel 9. I actually learned a few things myself. We saw a few professions of faith.

But I guess the most uplifting thing for me was the realization that these people took an idea plus nothing plus God and built a faith community in a pretty dark place. I think there's a big lesson there for us short-sighted Americans who sometimes want everything to be just perfect before we launch out on faith to follow the Lord's leading.............. Father give us faith like that ! ......................... I'm just sayin....

And while it might appear that Griff is providing the special music with Seminary student Cynthia as his backup vocalist, he is not. She is actually doing a fabulous job translating. After further discussion, we all agreed that Griff should leave the special music to Kirt Henderson.

Are you tired of hearing about Steve Jobs yet ???

Well, just in case you're not, let me thank him again. This blog is an experiment....... I usually carry my big honkin camera and a laptop on these excursions but this year decided to lean on Apple. I am photo-blogging this year with nothing more than an iPhone 4, an original iPad and the unbelievably strong wi-fi here in the hotel. The pictures aren't really large but I guess that's the tradeoff for simplicity :)

Saturday Afternoon at the abandoned elders home...

Saturday afternoon after a 53 minute power nap that wasn't quite long enough, we headed out to one of FIrst Baptist church's other mission points in a place called Las Pozas. Ron Cavanaugh, teacher at the seminary and Canadian missionary and his wife Rose, as well as Alisa Duncan, have been instrumental in starting and building a home for abandoned seniors off the beaten path between Zihua and San Jeronimito. It appears to be about 60% finished. They are allowing First Baptist's group (which is really a house church) to use the facility to put on a VBS there this week.

We showed up, toured the place, divided into teams, got prayed up and went out into the surrounding area to invite folks to the VBS and evangelistic services that will take place in the coming week. The area is unique in that it is filled with small brick-making facilities........ similiar to home-based businesses. There are LOTS of them. Here's some pics of me and my 'posse' out touring the neighborhood and inviting folks. As a group of adolescent boys, they were a little timid about inviting the older guys in the cantina to church, but after I promised them all a coke, they got a lot braver........
